After the Burmese army destroyed Ayutthaya, King Rama I built a new royal capital of Siam in Thonburi. Thonburi area is situated on the banks of Praya River and along the sides surrounded by canals. This Thonburi area of Bangkok is the embryo of what we know today. It is the oldest district in Thailand’s capital city.

Bangkok’s old city area is often called Rattanakosin Island because of its position surrounded by rivers and canals to resemble an island.
